چکیده

The idea of network is employed across the social sciences though hardly with analytical unanimity. At one level, it is used as a simple descriptive template cast over empirical phenomena. At another, it is given greater explanatory power with at least meso-systemic implications. Far stronger analytical claims are made when it is mobilised to generate a systematic morphological account of contemporary society. And even at this level, there is conceptual diversity. This paper will examine some of these stronger claims especially the ‘network society’ thesis, interrogating their theoretical adequacy, commensurability and limitations. It will also consider the implications they may entail for other levels of analysis and possible research directions.
